Education

Mr. Hasty graduated from Wake Forest College in 1957, earning a BA degree. He continued to law school at Wake Forest University earning a LLB degree in 1960. He was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity in college and Phi Delta Phi fraternity in law school.

Role at MHC

Mr. Hasty has developed a specialty in representation of media companies in libel, slander and defamation defense, freedom of access to public records, open court matters together with related First Amendment issues.

Professional Bio

Mr. Hasty has been in the active practice of law since 1960, serving as the assistant solicitor prosecuting criminal cases for Mecklenburg County for 5 years and thereafter in the general areas of civil litigation, real estate matters, zoning and land use, construction disputes, appellate practice in both state and federal courts. He is admitted to practice in all North Carolina Courts, the Eastern, Middle, and Western districts of the Federal Courts in North Carolina, the Federal 4th. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He has been a member of the various state and American bar associations as well as the defense council section of the Media Law Resource Center.

Personal Bio

Mr. Hasty was born in 1935 in Charlotte, where he attended public schools. He is married and has one daughter and three grandchildren who live in Gastonia. As to interests outside of the practice, he has been involved in motorcycle and sports car racing for most of his adult life. He was the chairman of the board of trustees for the American Motorcycle Association from 1983 to 1991, has competed both as an amateur and professional in motorcycle road racing and presently competes regularly in vintage sports car racing at various tracks across the country.
